As the title of this article says, there are services out there that offer criminal checks for free. This might sound like a good idea, but there are things that you need to know about it. Criminal records are held by the government, and while they are public records they are generally not given out for free. It is usual in most democratic countries that you will have to pay a fee in order to see them. The services that you will see online that offer free criminal checks are not necessarily fraudulent, however you do need to take the results with a grain of salt. Free criminal checks have been known to return the wrong information – which can be very unfair on you and / or the candidate, depending on the false result that comes back. You can try these services if you wish, but generally it is better to go with a paid service.

There are other, more reputable, companies out there who will do a criminal check for a small fee. For this price they will track down any existing criminal records, check them, and give you a report on what they have found. A paid service is generally more thorough when they check, and they have a better idea about the procedures that they need to go through in order to legally obtain a criminal record check. They will ensure that they have the right details, the right person and the right record before they come back to you. This is likely to give you more peace of mind.

As we mentioned earlier, a criminal check should be used as part of your hiring process, not instead of it! The interviews that you do, the reference checks and the education checks are just as important in giving you the overall picture of what a person is really like. A criminal background check is just another facet of this picture. Remember, having a criminal record does not automatically make someone un-hirable. You should pay close attention to what is written in the criminal record. Was the crime something extremely trivial that happened years ago? Or was it something serious? You will need to make your own decision as to where you take it from there, but a criminal background check is definitely a valuable tool for you as an employer.
